Scary Times in Appalachia: The NWP21 Hearings Get Rough

Last night, the Army Corps of Engineers held three of six hearings on the possible suspension of the Nationwide Permit 21 (NWP21) in Pikeville, KY, Charleston, WV and Knoxville, TN. NWP21 is a blanket permit used for valley fills - in other words, coal companies do not need to apply for an individual permit when they want to blow up a mountain and bury a stream. Obama Administration Refuses to Ban Mountaintop Removal Mining

In a press release today, the Obama Administration revealed their intent to further regulate mountaintop removal mining. At noon, a conference call was held between the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), Army Corps of Engineers, EPA, Department of Interior (DOI) and Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to discuss coordination between the offices and tighter regulations on the devastating practice.

23 Arrested for Civil Disobedience in Appalachia

It was a busy Memorial Day weekend for activists in Appalachia. At daybreak on May 23, eight brave souls from Mountain Justice and Climate Ground Zero climbed to the mountaintop removal site on Kayford Mountain in West Virginia and locked themselves to an enormous truck. Power Past Coal Rocks the 100th Day of Action in DC!

The Power Past Coal campaign, which brought together 300 actions across the country in the first 100 days of the Obama Administration, capped off the project with a powerful two days in DC!
